Staying Safe Online: Essential Tips for Parents and Kids

Phoenix Police Offer Internet Safety Tips for Summer Break

With summer break in full swing and children spending more time online, internet safety becomes a paramount concern. On the latest episode of the Phoenix 5 Info Show, Lieutenant Vince Lewis of the Phoenix Police Public Affairs Bureau hosted a special session on this topic, featuring two young guests, Emma (18) and Sophia (15), who provided valuable insights from a teenager’s perspective.

“Hello and welcome to the Phoenix 5 Info Show,” began Lieutenant Lewis. “I’m your host, Lieutenant Vince Lewis, coming to you from Phoenix Police Headquarters in Downtown Phoenix. Today, we are discussing how to stay safe on the internet with two very special guests: Emma and Sophia, my daughters.”

The discussion centered around the “Know to Protect” program by the Department of Homeland Security, which provides ten basic safety tips to safeguard children online. These tips are crucial as children navigate the expansive digital landscape during their free time.

Start an Open Conversation: The first tip emphasizes the importance of starting an open, two-way conversation with your child about internet safety. Emma and Sophia recalled their own experiences with their parents discussing the dangers of talking to strangers online and the importance of replicating safe behaviors from real life to the virtual world.

Password Protection: Ensuring that devices and app stores are password protected is another key measure. Emma shared how she uses two-step verification for her social media accounts, helping her control who can follow her and message her.

Set Screen Time Limits: Sophia highlighted the importance of setting screen time limits and having conversations about the reasons behind these limits. This understanding helps children appreciate the need for such measures beyond just parental control.

Privacy Settings: Setting all apps and gaming devices to private is crucial. Emma explained how keeping her accounts private has helped her avoid unsolicited and potentially harmful messages.

Location Data:Turning off location data services on non-essential apps is another important tip. Lieutenant Lewis discussed the benefits of tracking apps for safety, especially when children are driving or in unfamiliar areas.

Create Agreements: Establishing clear agreements about online behavior helps set expectations and provides a framework for what is considered acceptable and safe online conduct.

Digital Permanency: Understanding that online data can last a lifetime is crucial. Emma noted the impact of digital footprints on future opportunities, such as college scholarships, emphasizing the need to be mindful about what is shared online.

Lieutenant Lewis concluded the session by encouraging the community to report crimes and suspicious activities through Silent Witness and to stay connected with the Phoenix Police on social media.

“Remember, we’re all in this together,” he said, reinforcing the community’s role in ensuring a safe online environment for everyone. Parents and grandparents must teach them to use strong passwords, set privacy controls, and recognize online threats. Stay involved and proactive to ensure they navigate the internet safely. Your guidance can make all the difference in keeping your children safe online.
