Phoenix Zoo Mourns Loss of Beloved African Lion Boboo Due to Aggressive Cancer

Boboo, an Eight-Year-Old African Male Lion, Leaves Behind a Legacy Through His Cubs and the Species Survival Plan

In a heartfelt announcement, the Phoenix Zoo shared the sad news that their eight-year-old African male lion, Boboo, has been humanely euthanized following a diagnosis of aggressive cancer. The decision came after an initial examination and exploratory surgery revealed cancer affecting both his kidneys and spleen. Despite a routine annual exam just last month showing no signs of illness, the cancer progressed rapidly, underscoring its severity.

Boboo’s journey at the Phoenix Zoo began in 2019 when he arrived from the Columbus Zoo as a three-year-old. Since then, he has become a cherished member of the zoo family, endearing himself to keepers, staff, and visitors alike. His majestic presence and resonant roars brought a unique vibrancy to the zoo, which now feels noticeably quieter in his absence.

While this period is marked by deep sadness, there is also a sense of joy and hope. Zuri, another lion at the zoo, and her two cubs, fathered by Boboo, are thriving and surpassing expectations in their growth and development. Zuri, who has proven to be an exceptional first-time mother, continues to nurture her cubs with great care.

Boboo’s legacy extends beyond his immediate family. As the sire of his first litter, his genes will contribute to the Species Survival Plan® population, a vital conservation effort. This contribution brings solace to the zoo team, knowing that Boboo’s impact will persist through his offspring and their future generations.

The Phoenix Zoo is comforted by the fact that Boboo became part of his own pride this year. His legacy will endure through Zuri and their cubs, ensuring that his memory and genetic contributions will continue to benefit the broader lion population for years to come.
