Phoenix Police Release Video of Officer-Involved Shooting

Video Details Confrontation Leading to Suspect’s Death After Armed Motorcycle Theft Attempt

The Phoenix Police Department has released a Critical Incident Briefing (CIB) video concerning an officer-involved shooting (OIS) that occurred on June 2, 2024. The video includes audio, visuals, and information about the incident, which took place in the 1300 block of E Palm Lane. Viewer discretion is advised due to potentially graphic content and strong language.

On the afternoon of June 2, Phoenix police officers responded to a distress call reporting a man armed with a gun attempting to steal a motorcycle near 13th Street and Palm Lane. According to the 911 caller, the suspect was in possession of a firearm and trying to take her boyfriend’s motorcycle.

Upon arrival, the officers observed a man fitting the suspect’s description sitting on the motorcycle with a gun in his hand. As the officers exited their patrol vehicle, the suspect raised and pointed the firearm at them. Both officers responded by discharging their weapons at the suspect. Subsequent evidence indicated that the suspect had indeed fired his gun.

Following the shooting, the suspect dropped his firearm, and officers immediately approached to administer medical aid until the arrival of the fire department. The suspect was transported to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, no other individuals, including community members and officers, were harmed during the incident.

A handgun and a single bullet casing from the suspect’s weapon were recovered at the scene.

The two officers involved in the shooting are assigned to the Mountain View Precinct. They have been with the Phoenix Police Department for six and four years, respectively.

The incident is under a criminal investigation by the Phoenix Police Department and will be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. Additionally, an administrative investigation is underway to determine whether the officers’ actions were consistent with departmental policy and the law. The findings will be made public once all facts are reviewed and the investigation is complete.

The release of the CIB video is part of the Phoenix Police Department’s effort to maintain transparency with the public regarding critical incidents involving law enforcement. The department recognizes the sensitivity of such incidents and aims to provide comprehensive and factual accounts of events as they unfold.

In light of recent events, community leaders and advocacy groups have called for thorough investigations to ensure accountability and justice. The police department continues to engage with the community to address concerns and provide updates as the investigations progress.

The Phoenix Police Department urges the public to exercise caution when viewing the CIB video due to its graphic nature.
