Honoring the Fallen Heroes: Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial Dedication

Granite Mountain Hotshots Honored on the 11th Anniversary

On June 30, 2013, 19 members of the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew lost their lives battling the Yarnell Hill Fire. To mark the 11th anniversary of this tragedy, the City of Prescott and the Prescott Fire Department organized commemorative events and activities, celebrating the completion of the memorial sculpture at the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza.

A poignant dedication ceremony took place at the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza to honor the brave firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. The dedication of the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial saw a heartfelt gathering of community members, officials, and families of the fallen.


The City of Prescott and the Prescott Fire Department officially thanked the committee that tirelessly worked for over a decade to bring this memorial statue to fruition. This statue stands as a lasting tribute to the heroism and sacrifice of the Granite Mountain Hotshots.

The ceremony featured moving speeches from several distinguished speakers. Mayor Phil Goode, Yavapai County Board of Supervisors Chairman Craig Brown, and artist Deborah Fellows each shared their reflections and gratitude. The keynote address was delivered by Prescott Fire Chief Holger Durre, who spoke passionately about the legacy of the fallen heroes.

As the ceremony concluded, the Yavapai County Courthouse bells tolled 19 times, a solemn reminder of the 19 lives lost. This poignant moment resonated deeply with everyone present, symbolizing the courage and dedication of those who served.

The event was held at the memorial site located on Cortez between Union and Goodwin.
