Phoenix Trails Take to Chill During Heatwaves

Phoenix Trails To Chill During Heatwaves

Popular Trails Will Close Temporarily on Scorching Days in Phoenix

As the summer heat ramps up, the City of Phoenix has announced that three of its beloved trails will take a breather during scorching days.

When the National Weather Service waves its “Excessive Heat Warning” wand, Camelback Mountain’s Echo and Cholla Trails, along with all trails linked to Piestewa Peak Trailhead in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, will take a siesta from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

But don’t worry; this isn’t a permanent vacation! As soon as the heatwave cools its jets, these trails will be back in business, ready to welcome eager hikers.

So, how will you know if your favorite trail is taking a heat break? Keep an eye on the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department’s website and social media accounts (start your online exploration here: https://www.phoenix.gov/parks/trails. They’ll post closure info faster than you can say “water break.” And if you’re chilling at a local resort or hotel, expect a heads-up there too!

To make sure everyone stays cool, Phoenix Park Rangers will be on the lookout at these locations, gently reminding trail-goers about the temporary closures. Plus, you can sign up for “Hiking and Heat Updates” online to stay in the loop via email (sign up here: https://www.phoenix.gov/parks/trails/take-a-hike-do-it-right)

But fear not, trail enthusiasts! There’s a silver lining to this heatwave cloud. To beat the heat and keep the hiking vibe alive, North Mountain Park, Piestewa Peak Trailhead, and Pima Canyon Trailhead have extended summer hours from June through September. That means you can hit the trails until 9 p.m., giving you a few extra hours of outdoor bliss after the sun’s harsh rays have mellowed out.

Now, before you lace up those hiking boots, remember these golden rules for a safe and enjoyable hike:

  1. Dress the Part: Proper shoes, clothing, hats, and sunscreen are your hiking buddies.
  2. Hydrate Like a Boss: Drink plenty of water before hitting the trails, and carry more than you think you’ll need. Pro tip: Head back to the trailhead before you’re halfway through your water supply.
  3. Stay Connected: Bring your mobile phone along for the adventure.
  4. Buddy Up: Hike with pals whenever possible. If you’re flying solo, share your plans with someone trustworthy.
  5. Listen to Your Body: Know your limits and respect them. No need to push yourself beyond what’s comfortable, especially in Arizona’s sizzling heat.
  6. Trail Etiquette: Keep the adventure on designated trails, respecting the beauty of the Sonoran Desert’s natural landscape.
  7. Be the Responsible Hiker: Don’t be “that person” who ends up in a pickle due to lack of preparation or ignoring safety guidelines. Be the hero of your hiking tale!

And a friendly reminder for our furry friends: Dogs are off the trail menu when temperatures hit 100 degrees or higher. Even temperatures in the 90s can be ruff on pets, so let’s keep them cool and comfy indoors during the hot spells.

Stay informed, stay hydrated, and stay safe as you explore Phoenix’s vibrant trails this summer. Happy hiking.
