Phoenix Airports Contribute $44.3 Billion to Local Economy

Recent ASU Study Indicates Nearly 15% Growth Since 2016

The economic impact of the Phoenix Airport System has garnered significant attention following the release of a study from Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business. This study highlights a remarkable surge in the system’s economic impact, with a nearly 15% increase since 2016. Based on data from calendar year 2022, the study reveals that Phoenix Sky Harbor, Phoenix Deer Valley, and Phoenix Goodyear airports collectively contribute $44.3 billion to the local economy annually. This growth is particularly noteworthy given the challenges posed by the pandemic and ongoing recovery efforts.

Mayor Kate Gallego of Phoenix has emphasized the pivotal role of the airport system in propelling the local economy forward and creating avenues for residents and businesses alike. She remarked, “The Phoenix Airport System is a critical asset to our community and state, and this new study underscores how vital it is to our economy.” Her statement encapsulates the sentiment that these airports serve as more than just transportation hubs; they are fundamental drivers of economic activity and employment.

Vice Mayor Debra Stark commended the diligent efforts of aviation staff, noting the positive impact on the economy. She stated, “We know that Sky Harbor and our general aviation airports have a dramatic positive impact on our economy. This new report proves yet again that the hard work of our aviation staff has continued to pay big dividends, in jobs and investment. When passengers enjoy our airport amenities, they’re not only enjoying a great travel experience, they’re investing in jobs for our community.”

These perspectives from city leaders underscore the multifaceted impact of the Phoenix Airport System on the local economy, job market, and overall quality of life for residents. As Phoenix experiences growth and transformation, its airports remain central to its economic resilience and global connectivity.

Furthermore, the study highlights a significant increase in visitor spending at Phoenix Sky Harbor, rising from $5.8 billion in 2016 to $6.5 billion in 2022, a 12% increase. On average, domestic visitors spend $831 per person per trip, while international visitors spend $1,002 per person per trip, contributing to a total annual spending of $7 billion from both domestic and international visitors.
