This Saturday and Sunday is the annual Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market, featuring a juried show, silent auction, and cultural and musical performances all weekend long.

First held 59 years ago, and now the second largest Native American art fair and market in the United States, the fair gives guests the chance to see some of the finest examples of both traditional and contemporary Native American art. The fair features work in a variety of media, including jewelry, paintings, sculptures, weaving, and pottery.

Friday night the fair kicks off with the “Best of Show” reception, where artists at the fair will compete in award categories. This event will also feature fashions from artists presenting their designs at the show for purchase at the reception. Admission is separate from the rest of the fair weekend, and doors open for the event at 5:00 pm.

Two stages of cultural and musical performances are headlined by the R. Carlos Nakai Quartet. Nakai, considered the world’s finest performer of the Native American flute, has recorded over 40 albums, and his “Canyon Trilogy” was certified platinum in 2014.

Besides the music, traditional cultural exhibitions will be happening on the Amphitheater Stage, with performances by groups representing several different Native American tribes. One of the highlights will be the Dineh Tah’ Navajo Dancers, a group that combines traditional Native American rhythms with contemporary interpretations in their performances. 

For those wanting to purchase work by the artists and support the Heard, a silent auction runs online through the weekend.

This year the Heard adds something for the kids, as Violet Duncan will host storytelling and crafts for children on both Saturday and Sunday.

Doors open to the public on Saturday and Sunday at 9:30am, and tickets can be purchased in advance through Friday.
