This Saturday morning, the Phoenix zoo will be hosting its annual “Winter in July event, a welcomed change considering the recent heat.
From 7-11 a.m., more than 50 tons of snow will be pumped into the zoo.
The Phoenix Zoo is planning to create a winter environment with snow-themed games and snacks for both animals and patrons. Throughout, snow machines will produce blizzard like conditions for those who attend.
Despite the 103 degree heat that’s expected for Saturday, snow areas will allow children to frolic in the snow.
Monkeys and cheetahs will be served special icy treats.
A “Winter Games” section of the zoo, which includes games like snow targets, cornhole snow toss and snow paint, will be open as well.
The last time it snowed in Phoenix, the year was 1937.
Although there have been instances of recorded snow in other high elevation parts of the Valley, snow in Phoenix extremely rare.
Open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., the zoo charges general admission of $14.95 for children and $24.95 for adults.
