Street Improvement Project Means More Time for Commuters

It may be time to find a new favorite coffee and donut shop, as changes coming to Phoenix streets are leaving some commuters rethinking their morning route to work. Third Street, a route frequented by many work travelers, is on the docket to lose motor-vehicle lanes.

While Third Street is a rush hour favorite for some in Downtown Phoenix, it is often used by others as an alternative to Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue. Changes to Third Street were proposed after extensive studies and community feedback indicated the need for a transit overhaul.

According to the City of Phoenix’s website, the overall goal of the Third Street Improvement Project will be “aimed at improving traffic circulation and mobility for pedestrians and bicyclists on Third Street between Indian School Road and Roosevelt Street.”

A full list of changes coming to Third Street include the following:

  • reducing the number of travel lanes
  • adding bicycle lanes on both sides of the street
  • landscape enhancements
  • street lighting upgrades
  • sidewalk and ADA improvements
  • safer street crossings for pedestrians

While some businesses are not keen on the new changes, Mark Melnychenko, Special Projects Administrator, indicated via KJZZ that these changes are all about a “balance between commuters and area residents,” which further endorses the project’s goal of facilitating a safer environment for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists alike.

Construction is set to begin by the end of year.

Other Phoenix streets listed for construction overhaul include the following:

  • Van Buren Street
  • Oak Street
  • Missouri Avenue
  • 5th Avenue
  • 67th Avenue
