ScreenX Experience Attempts To Compete With Netflix

As movie theaters continue working to compete with Netflix, they’re newest effort is to use three big screens instead of the traditional one.

Worldwide, cinemas are embracing ScreenX, a new effort that surrounds their audiences with 270-degrees of screens. With one at the front and one on each side, the experience is expected to be more immersive that an at-home viewing experience.

Developed in 2012, the South Korean technology can be found in more than 150 theaters across the world. The largest movie theater chain in the United Kingdom recently implemented the technology and has future plans of phasing it into 100 of its locations.

The United States has also joined the ScreenX trend, with two California theaters and one Las Vegas theater having installed the technology.

ScreenX was first used in the United States last year with the release of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

“Seeing our film span three entire walls of an auditorium, and to be able to have the film extend beyond the screen has been exciting,” said the film’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

While Bruckheimer enjoyed the experience, a movie reviewer did not believe it was utilized as advertised as only “10 to 15 percent” of the movie was displayed on the screens on each side of the viewers.

Since the initial film, “Black Panther” and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” used the 270-degree format, but still failed to live up to expectations.

According to a report from Variety, the suite of projectors and control center needed for ScreenX costs approximately $400,000. Time will tell if the new technology will make its way to Arizona.
