Quarterback Sam Bradford Released By Arizona Cardinals

Home Quarterback Sam Bradford Released By Arizona Cardinals

November 7, 2018

The Sam Bradford Era was cut short as the Arizona Cardinals chose to release the veteran quarterback.

In three starts this season, Bradford was 50 of 80 for 400 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.

During a Week 3 game against the Chicago Bears, Bradford was benched for rookie quarterback Josh Rosen. Rosen has held the starting role for the Cardinals ever since.

During the NFL Draft in April, Rosen was selected tenth overall by the Cardinals, but head coach Steve Wilks pegged Bradford as the starter heading into the preseason.

A nine-year veterans and former No. 1 overall draft pick, Bradford signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals in March. He was guaranteed $15 million in his contract through a $10 million signing bonus and a $5 million salary for the 2018 season.

Additional bonuses included $5 million if Bradford was active on game days. In an effort to avoid paying Bradford to sit, Mike Glennon was the active back-up quarterback once Rosen took over as the starter.

Bradford now will be available to be claimed off of waivers by other teams.

The 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, Bradford attended college at the University of Oklahoma before being selected by the Rams in the 2010 draft with the first-overall pick. A record-setting first year ended with him being named the 2010 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

After a successful rookie year, injuries began to impede Braford’s potential NFL success. His time in St. Louis, Philadelphia and Minnesota all featured knee-related injuries. After suffering a knee injury during a 2014 preseason game, he went on to miss the entirety of the season.

Bradford has a career completion rate of 62.5 percent, along with 19,449 passing yards, 103 touchdowns and 61 interceptions.

Along with releasing Bradford, additional Cardinals roster moves included placing offensive lineman John Wetzel (neck) on injured reserve.
