Phoenix Drops to Second in Population Growth Ranking for 2016-2017

In 2017 Phoenix added 24,036 new residents, making it the second fastest growing city in the nation for 2017 (second only to San Antonio, Texas). Buckeye, Arizona ranked fifth in the nation with a 5.9% population increase and Maricopa County was actually the fastest growing county in the nation with a 1.7% population increase. Demographers credit net national and international migration as well as an increase in birth rate.

Phoenix’s increase, while second in the nation, was still a decrease from last year when Phoenix was the fastest growing city. Despite its second place finish in 2017, Phoenix grew enough to retain its place as the fifth largest city in the United States.
