The NFL will have two more professional football leagues joining it soon. The newest of these, the Alliance of American Football (AAF) was announced this week at a press conference in New York.

The AAF is a new spring league that will not compete with the NFL. It’s considered to be complementary to the NFL, as the season ends in April, months before the start of NFL training camps, and players will not have long-term deals impeding them from playing in the NFL. 

However, some of the rules will differ from the NFL. There will be no kickoffs; teams will start on the 25-yard line at each half and after a score. In addition, there will be no onside kicks — the team who scores a touchdown will instead get the ball on its 35 in a 4th-and-10 situation. There will be no extra points, forcing teams to go for a 2-point conversion. 

The AAF will have eight teams, to be announced next month, according to Charlie Ebersol, the league’s CEO.

The AAF will debut on Feb. 9, 2019, on CBS Sports Network.

The other new league is the XFL, whose relaunch is set for 2020, after only playing one season in 2001.
