Memorial Day weekend is a time where many travel to see friends and family as it is the first long weekend of the summer. This Memorial Day is no different as it is expected that more than 787,000 Arizonans will be travelling during the 3 day weekend. The expected amount of travelers will be the largest in over 12 years, according to Triple-A of Arizona.

The agency estimates there will be busier roadways with the expected amount of Arizonans travelers and will be more travelled than the skies during the extended weekend.

Michelle Donati, spokeswoman for Triple-A of Arizona states, “Both auto and air travel are expected to increase over last year. More than 690,000 Arizonans will drive to their destinations and more than 67,000 will fly.”

According to Donati, the travel numbers for this year suggest approximately 20,000 more Arizonans plan to go on vacation this year in comparison to last year.

“Which is an increase of about 3 percent from last year,” Donati said. “This marks the third consecutive year of state and nationwide growth in Memorial Day travel.”

With the increase in travel unfortunately comes with increased prices compared to last year as the price of gas has increased 13 cents higher with the average cost of gas being $2.29 a gallon. Also hotel rates have increased 18 percent compared to rates last year.

Coupon website Offers.com and hotel booking site Hotwire teamed up for a study with the results stating the most popular destination for Arizonans for Memorial Day weekend is California.

Coming in second in the study is somewhere in Arizona besides their home. This means Interstate 17 will probably be quite busy on Memorial Day weekend.

Nevada is the third most popular destination for Arizonans.
