Mark Zuckerberg Releases Statement Regarding Data Scandal

In light of recent allegations that the data analysis firm Cambridge Analytica gained access to the user data of 50 million Facebook accounts, concerns are growing among users looking for ways to protect their personal information.

There are claims that the firm developed an app called “thisisyourdigitallife” in an effort to harvest user data that was used during their 2016 election advertising campaign.

A former employee of the American online social media and social networking service company even went on record asserting “horrifying” misuse of user data was common at the company.

Some users of the service remain unaware that there are a number of other apps that have access to their Facebook information and the sheer level of data that these apps collect.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg issued the following statement regarding the scandal, “We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you. I’ve been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to step up and do it.”

Here are some steps that users can take to protect their information. First, access Facebook’s App Settings page. Review the apps and delete any that seem suspicious by simply clicking the “X” that appears beside the apps name. Then, click the “edit” button on the “Apps Others Use” section to display a page that allows you to decide what information about your profile your Facebook friends should be allowed to share with apps.
