Governor Candidate, Ken Bennett, Releases School Safety Plan

Ken Bennett, former Arizona Secretary of State and current Gubernatorial candidate, released his proposed school safety plan as he continues his campaign for Arizona’s governorship. Bennett’s plan highlights arming school staff members and tracking mental health issues more closely, while opposes tighter gun restrictions. According to Bennett, the best way to promote school safety is to “not remove guns but will put guns where necessary to protect our children. The best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

Along with adding more law enforcement officers to school campuses, Bennett’s wants to provide firearm training to willing school staff members, create a task force focusing on safety during emergencies, and train school officials in emergency operational control skills. Further, Bennett proposes awarding willing staff members with tax credits.

Bennett’s plan conflicts with Governor Ducey’s focus on providing mental health assistance, acting on credible threats, and restricting an individual’s ability to purchase a firearm when they’ve been identified as a threat. Bennett believes Ducey’s plan “focuses too heavily on seizing guns. My plan restores the focus to protecting our children.”
