Elementary School To Be Named After John McCain In West Valley District

A unanimous vote on Monday makes a dream into reality as late Arizona political icon John McCain will be the namesake for an elementary school in the West Valley school district.

The Buckeye Elementary School District Governing Board voted to name the future campus John S. McCain III Elementary School.

In a press release, the district said it received Cindy McCain’s blessing to name the school in her husband’s memory, adding that she looked forward to being involved.

McCain died in August nearly one year after being diagnosed with brain cancer. He was serving his sixth term in the U.S. Senate at the time of his death.

“The qualities that Sen. McCain so passionately and effectively represented are what we wish to enshrine as a model for the children of our community,” Superintendent Dr. Kristi Sandvik said in the release.

The district currently operates seven elementary schools and two preschools, serving more than 5,500 students.
