Classy Concoctions: Get a Merit Badge in Booze at Summer Cocktail Camp

Phoenix Magazine’s third annual Summer Cocktail Camp is already back in session, but it’s still not too late for newcomers to join in for the final two Sundays of mixology and mingling. The hugely popular “camp,” emceed by Phoenix Magazine’s editor Craig Outhier and by cocktail writer Shelby Moore, covers seven of Phoenix’s hottest cocktail joints over seven weeks, and features cocktail-making crash courses, great food à la carte, and—most importantly—lots of drinks. Lots of drinks. This Sunday, August 21st, Cocktail Camp will pay a visit to Jade Bar and master mixologist Eddie Garcia (who also hosts Mixology 101 every Saturday at the same venue). “Class” starts at 1:00 pm, and a ticket will cost you 38 bucks. That ticket covers up to four cocktails (depending on their complexity) and a special take-home gift.

 Not a bad deal.

Tickets also include a crash course in mixology featuring brand-new cocktail recipes, and that is a gift that will never stop giving—as the ancient saying goes: Give a man a cocktail and he will drink for a day. Teach a man to mix a cocktail, and he will drink for a lifetime.

Seating is limited, and every session of Summer Cocktail Camp so far has sold out early, so be sure to get your tickets as soon as possible. But no fear: if you miss out on this Sunday at Jade Bar, you might still make the camp’s seventh and final session on Sunday, August 28th at Virtu in Old Town Scottsdale. There, “class” will be held by Fernando Bambaren, Virtu’s expert mixologist and bar manager, who specializes in seasonal drinks. Again, a ticket (or should I say “tuition?”) costs 38 dollars.

It’s never too late to go back to school—take a class in mixology at Summer Cocktail Camp.

And please drive safely!
