Car-Seat Tips For Child Passenger Safety Week

Arizona state agencies, law enforcement, hospitals, and non-profit organizations are partnering together to educate drivers about the proper usage of booster and child-safety seats in honor of  Child Passenger Safety Week.

Car seat safety checks are being held across the state and Valley as part of the awareness campaign. Phoenix Fire Department statistics show that four out of every five child car safety seats are installed incorrectly. And it is estimated that one-third of children were found to be riding in the wrong restraints for their age and size. In Arizona, children younger than 8 years old or less than 4 feet and 9 inches tall must use a child safety seat, such as a booster seat, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers tips for parents using car seats:

-Select a car seat based on your child’s age and size
Find the right car seat — there are four types of car seats
-Learn how to install each car seat correctly
-Register your car seat to receive recall notices

For Child Passenger Safety Week, the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is partnering with several non-profit organizations and government agencies to offer classes and events to inform and educate drivers. In addition, the Phoenix Fire Department also schedules car seat safety appointments. To schedule an appointment, call 602-495-KIDS (5437).
