Arizona Traffic Fatalities At 10-Year Record High In 2017

According to a Department of Transportation 2017 study, a person was killed every 8 hours and 46 minutes in a traffic accident in Arizona. Released on Tuesday, the report revealed that there were 1,000 fatalities on Arizona roads last year alone. The number is the highest since 2007, which saw 1,071 deaths.

For the past three years, the number has been climbing to this devastating record. Of the fatalities, 226 were pedestrians, which is a 17% increase from 2016, and almost a quarter of the total deaths. 320 of the accidents were the result of alcohol consumption, and 285 the result of excessive speed.

Together, the trifecta of alcohol, prescription medication, and illegal drugs caused 43% of the fatalities. 90% of the crashes were due to driver behavior.

The report also stated an economic loss due to poor driving. There were 127,064 crashes in Arizona in 2017, resulting in $10.765 billion lost in damages.

Arizona Department of Transportation director John Halikowski encourages drivers to take care when they get behind the wheel, “Choose not to speed. Choose not to drive drunk or on drugs. Choose life for yourself and others sharing the road with you.”

ADOT’s Doug Pacey adds, “The big takeaway is we all have to be better drivers.”
