12M Pounds Of Raw Beef From Arizona Recalled For Salmonella

A raw beef recall from October has been extended after reports of more people getting sick with salmonella related illnesses.

At this point, more than 12 million pounds of raw beef products have been recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. As a result of the contamination, nearly 250 people have fallen sick.

The source of the contaminated beef originated at JBS Tolleson Inc., in Tolleson, Arizona. However, the meat has been shipped and sold nationwide. Current beef in grocery stores are not impacted. The report states that the contaminated beef was packaged in late July and also in early September, but officials are concerned that consumers may still unknowingly have some of the beef products in their freezer.

Consumers are being asked to check the packaging date between July 26, and September 7 to identify affected products. Each product’s USDA mark of inspection will also include the establishment number “EST. 267.” The USDA advises to dispose of any affected beef.

Consuming food contaminated with salmonella can cause salmonellosis, which is a bacterial illness. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. While most symptoms can last about a week, the illness can cause serious complications. Anyone that suspects that they could be suffering from salmonellosis should talk to their doctor immediately.
