10,000 Flags Salute Military For Memorial Day

Volunteers have planted 10,000 U.S. flags at the University of Phoenix earlier this week as an annual tribute to the men and women who died serving our country.

The Memorial Day tribute features a field of flags that is about 100 yards long and 25 feet wide on the lawn of the main campus off of I-10 and 32nd Street. The flags spell out this year’s theme: Fallen. Not Forgotten.

The school has created the 10,000-flag Memorial Day salute over the past nine years.

The message can be best seen from high above the ground. It is the school’s hope that with Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport nearby, the thousands of flyers arriving and departing the valley will get a glimpse of the tribute.

“On a personal basis, this is one of the greatest things the university does,” John Ramirez, dean of operations for the School of Advanced Studies, said.

The 27-year Army veteran added the display was of “significant importance to me.”

Volunteers will remove the flags on Friday and take them to the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, where they will be placed on grave markers. The cemetery is located at the crossroads of Cave Creek and Pinnacle Peak in Phoenix.
